The plan
Maintaining our Facilities for Years to Come
Austin Public Schools is proposing a two-question bond referendum to update core infrastructure and address our biggest needs:
Question One asks voters to consider a $54.7 million investment to make major repairs and renovations of the district’s school buildings, including mechanical system upgrades, safer entrances, accessibility compliance, bathroom updates, and classroom renovations.
Question Two requests an additional $12 million to renovate and expand the Bud Higgins Pool at Ellis Middle School. Question Two can only pass if Question One also passes.
If approved by voters on November 4, the plan would support:
-
New heating, cooling, and electrical systems will improve indoor air quality, help our buildings run more efficiently, cost less to maintain, and be easier to repair. These updates will also help save on energy costs.
-
The proposed project will bring our buildings up to ADA code (Americans with Disabilities Act) to ensure our buildings are accessible for everyone, including restrooms, hallways, doors, and ramps.
-
New, safer entrances will help staff better monitor who is coming in and out of our buildings. New fire alarm systems will keep our students and staff safe in the event of an emergency.
-
Improved circulation and air filters will help create healthier learning spaces.
-
Classrooms need updated cabinets and storage, new doors with safer locks and stronger glass, new windows, and repairs to damaged ceilings. Some spaces will be repurposed into classrooms to better support students. School interiors would also receive new paint and flooring.
-
The project will include updates to bathrooms to meet ADA standards and updates to locker rooms, which will help our schools meet the needs of both students and the community.
-
Replacing outer doors and fixing pavement, curbs, walls, and bricks will help keep the outside of our buildings strong and in good shape.
-
Repairs to the pool area at Ellis Middle School will include replacing the roof, air handling unit, pool equipment, deck and walls, and expanding the diving well to meet current standards.
